The Institute of Diabetes and Regeneration Research (IDR) at the Helmholtz Diabetes Center München, headed by Prof. Heiko Lickert, focuses on the development of regenerative therapeutic approaches to treat diabetes mellitus - complementary and alternative to the classical immunological and metabolic therapy strategies. The aim is to improve current strategies for functional β-cell production in vitro with the ultimate goal to provide alternative sources of β-cells for cell replacement therapy in diabetes.

Your mission

IDR is looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate with a strong interest in stem cell research to join the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) funded consortium eISLET. The overall goal of this consortium is to engineer functional pancreatic islets from human-induced pluripotent stem cells to enable cell replacement therapy for diabetic patients.

The selected PhD student will work synergistically with the PhD students hired in the other groups within the consortium.

Your qualifications

  • Master degree or Diploma in Life Sciences e.g. Biology (Stem cell or Developmental Biology), Medicine, Biochemistry or related discipline
  • Basic knowledge of cell culture (preferably human pluripotent stem cells), flow cytometry and general cell and molecular biology techniques
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Fluent in English oral and writing
  • Desired qualifications
  • A high level of motivation and a strong interest in translational research

Remuneration and social benefits are based on the collective wage agreement for public-sector employees at federal level (EG 13 50% TV EntgO Bund). In addition, there is also the possibility of granting an allowance amounting to 15% if the necessary conditions are fulfilled. The position is (initially) limited to three years, but under certain circumstances an extension can be arranged.
