Helmholtz Zentrum München is a research center with the mission to discover personalized medical solutions for the prevention and therapy of environmentally triggered diseases and promote a healthier society in a rapidly changing world.

News on the Corona pandemic
We continue to recruit and are looking exactly for you. To this end, we have adapted our recruitment process to ensure the greatest possible health protection for both our applicants and our employees. After successfully reviewing your application documents, we will invite you to a friendly video call or telephone interview, no special devices needed. Here we simulate a face-to-face interview situation in order to get to know you better. Fight with us against the spread of environmentally related diseases and apply now.

With us you will support renowned researchers in a vibrant international environment. Their task is to improve people’s quality of life with excellent research results.

The Institute of Epidemiology (EPI) assesses genetic, environmental and lifestyle risk factors which jointly determine the occurrence of major chronic diseases. We focus on the development and progression of metabolic, respiratory and allergic diseases, as well as heart diseases and mental health. Our goal is to better understand the molecular underpinning of disease and to translate this knowledge into personalized approaches of prevention as well as policies to improve health. Our research builds on the unique resources of the KORA cohort and the birth cohorts GINI and LISA. We also play a central role in planning and setting up of the German National Cohort (GNC) and build the GNC biorepository.

At the next possible time, in the scope of the HAICU-project Noise2NAKO^AI, the EPI is looking for a highly motivated

Your responsibilities

  • Advance AI/ML methods to elucidate  the complex interplay between the environment and population health.
  • Assess the link between noise, socio-economic and demographic neighborhood information and individual health data from > 200k participants of the NAKO cohort to identify vulnerable regional clusters for the risk of hypertension across Germany.
  • Develop and compare innovative approaches (e.g. Distribution Regression Networks, Quantile Regression Forests, Model-based and/or Density-based Clustering Methods) to tackle the trade-off between complexity and interpretability.
  • Interact closely with epidemiologists, data scientists (HMGU, Department of Information and Communication Technology (ICT)) and geographers (DLR, Earth Observation Center).
  • Present the research results to the scientific community, i.e. by publishing in high-level journals and presentations at international conferences.
  • Join the Helmholtz Artificial Intelligence platform and interact with junior and senior scientists with interdisciplinary backgrounds.

Your qualification

  • Excellent PhD in computer sciences, mathematics, geosciences or equivalent scientific background.
  • Experience with neural network architectures (CNN, RNN, DRN),  ensemble learning (Tree-based methods) or transfer learning (Inductive and Transductive Learning), preferably in big and heterogeneous data environments.
  • Strong coding skills in Python and experience with machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow or scikit-learn.
  • Profound statistical expertise and a keen interest in applying innovative methods (including specifically interpretable approaches) in the field of epidemiology.
  • Desired qualifications
  • Knowledge of virtualization and containerization tools like DOCKER.
  • Experience with version control system, git, and visualization frameworks (e.g. D3).
