Our mission as research center: Discover personalized medical solutions for environmentally triggered diseases to promote a healthier society in a rapidly changing world.

The primary objective of the Institute of Diabetes and Regeneration Research (IDR) at the Helmholtz Diabetes Center München is to develop regenerative therapeutic approaches to treat diabetes mellitus - complementary and alternative to the classical immunological and metabolic therapy strategies. Therefore, the main aim is to improve current strategies for functional β-cell production in vitro with the ultimate goal to provide alternative sources of β-cells for cell replacement therapy in diabetes, while in the field of β-cell regeneration we focus on the understanding of β-cell heterogeneity in health and diabetes and on the exploration of in vivo mechanisms of β-cell regeneration to identify therapeutic targets to stop or even reverse diabetes progression.
