The research group for Cell Engineering is one of 11 inter-disciplinary laboratories at the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) at the Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen (HMGU) and focuses on developing genetically encodable molecular labels and sensors for innovative imaging schemes primarily fluorescence and optoacoustic imaging. We use protein engineering to develop labels based on our research in photophysics and structure-function relationships. These labels are employed on the level of single mammalian cells as well as whole organisms. We also work on specialized screening, spectroscopy and imaging instrumentation to complement our molecular tools. We are looking for a highly qualified and motivated PhD student (f/m/d) to explore the photophysics of innovative optical labels and develop instrumentation for screening and spectroscopy. Optoacoustic imaging is a novel imaging approach that is currently only little explored in regard to the underlying photophysics of its labels (contrast agents). Our group is focusing on chromophoric proteins but is also interested in synthetic dyes and bio-inspired nano-particles. In all cases, an understanding of photophysics is essential to steer development approaches.

Your responsibilities

    The student will work tightly with protein-engineers and chemists in understanding the photophysics by developing next generation instrumentation for the high-throughput characterization of photophysical features in cells and purified protein as well as Optoacoustics imaging devices exploiting those new agents. These technologies will build on advanced optics, e.g. in combination with microfluidics, ultrasound detection and fast data acquisition and processing. The position calls for a high motivation and curiosity, not only to build setups but also link to other disciplines in multidisciplinary projects. The work will give the student the possibility to hone their analytical skills at the interface of technology, data-science and life-science which is typical for many modern research questions. Consequently, the work will be conducted in close collaboration with other interdisciplinary researchers of the Cell Engineering group but also other laboratories of the Technical University Munich (TUM) and HMGU that are leading in the respective research areas, e.g. engineering, data-sciences, cell-biology and bio-medical research.

Your qualifications

  • High motivation, curiosity, and commitment to scientific excellence
  • Master Degree in Physics, Optical-Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or similar field
  • Background in optical or ultrasound methods
  • Experience in setup building/modification and not only application
  • Skills of problem solving and prototype designing according to unmet specifications
