With us you will support renowned researchers in a vibrant international environment. Their task is to improve people’s quality of life with excellent research results.

Research at the Institute of Functional Epigenetics aims at understanding the epigenetic principles underlying how cells and organisms integrate metabolic signals, establish cellular memory, and regulate plasticity in order to identify new epigenetic pathways and novel therapeutic targets. The group Cell and Organell Size Controll (group leader Dr. Schmoller) is looking for a highly motivated

Your responsibilities

Mitochondria are essential for eukaryotic life, and accurate homeostasis of the mitochondrial network and mitochondrial DNA is critical for cell function. However, how cells maintain correct concentrations of mitochondria during cell cycle and cell growth is poorly understood. Our lab takes an interdisciplinary approach at the interface between quantitative biology and biophysics to reveal the fundamental principles underlying mitochondrial homeostasis. Using microfluidics-based live-cell microscopy, cell biology, and mathematical modelling, we aim to obtain a quantitative understanding of how cells coordinate production of mitochondria and mitochondrial DNA replication with cell growth. We use budding yeast as a model system but also aim to test whether our findings are conserved in mammalian cells.

Your qualification

  • Master's degree cell biology, biophysics, or similar fields
  • Wet lab experience and basic skills in molecular in cell biology
  • Interest in interdisciplinary and quantitative biology
  • Excellent skills in spoken and written English
