The Faculty of Medicine of LMU Munich and the Helmholtz Zentrum München – German Research Center for Environmental Health (Helmholtz Munich) invite applications for a Professorship (W2) (5 years/tenure track) of Molecular Crosstalk in Metabolic Disease combined with the lead of a working group Tissue Crosstalk at the Institute for Diabetes and Cancer at Helmholtz Munich commencing as soon as possible.

The W2 professorship is located at the Institute for Prophylaxis and Epidemiology of Circulatory Diseases (IPEK), University Hospital of LMU Munich, and is associated with the head of the Tissue Crosstalk working group at the Institute for Diabetes and Cancer of Helmholtz Munich.


Research Focus

The professor leads the Section of Molecular Crosstalk in Metabolic Disease within the Institute of Cardiovascular Prevention. The successful candidate is expected to represent the entire scope of the topic in research and teaching at the University.

The main task of the appointment is heading the working group and section Tissue Crosstalk at the Institute for Diabetes and Cancer at Helmholtz Munich. The professor has no clinical duties or commitments to observe.

The candidate is expected to strengthen the existing research foci and clusters at the Faculty of Medicine or other Departments of LMU Munich with relevance to cardiovascular-metabolic disease and to mechanistically oriented molecular research linked to pathology. Along these lines, the professorship shall contribute to the collaborative research centre 1123 on atherosclerosis and successive initiatives, the German Cardiovascular Research Centre/Munich Heart Alliance (MHA), the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) and to other initiatives in metabolic disease and endocrinology, e.g. at the Centre for Inflammation and Metabolism (CIM).

Qualifications

The research focus of the candidate shall be within the area of basic biochemical and cell biology research with close links to vascular and metabolic diseases. The candidate shall have strong international visibility and an excellent track record in the above field.

LMU Munich and Helmholtz Munich seek to appoint a highly qualified junior academic to this professorship and, therefore, especially encourage early-career scholars to apply. Prerequisites for this position are a university degree and a doctoral degree or a comparable specific qualification. With an excellent record in research and teaching to date, prospective candidates will have demonstrated the potential for an outstanding academic career.

The future holder of this position will be appointed to LMU Munich as a university professor (pay grade W2) under the terms of a private-law contract and will be granted leave of absence in order to be employed by Helmholtz Munich as the lead of an associated working group at the Institute for Diabetes and Cancer.

The initial appointment will be for five years. After a minimum of three years it can be converted into a permanent position pending a positive evaluation of the candidate’s performance in research and teaching as well as his or her personal aptitude and if all legal conditions are met.
