Helmholtz Munich operates eight core facilities providing cutting edge support for all research departments as well as external customers. We are bringing together bioinformatics and statistical expertise under one roof and are looking to appoint a leader for this core facility to further enhance our data analytical support.

As Head of the Core Facility Bioinformatics and Statistics, you will lead a multidisciplinary team supporting researchers with computational and statistical analyses in biomedical and life sciences. You will strategically manage and develop the core facility, develop analytical pipelines and statistical consulting services, advise on experimental design, and provide training in bioinformatics and biostatistics methodologies. The position requires expertise in computational biology, strategic foresight, clear dedication and the ability to provide excellent service.

Your key responsibilities

  • Leadership & strategic development: Leading and developing a multidisciplinary team of bioinformaticians and statisticians. Developing and implementing the facility’s strategic vision in alignment with the research goals of Helmholtz Munich.
  • Data analysis & method integration: Developing and maintaining computational pipelines for genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, spatialomics and other -omics data. Ensuring best practices in data processing, integration and visualization. Evaluating and implementating AI-based tools for bioinformatics analysis.
  • Statistical consultation: Advising researchers on experimental design and data analysis. Working closely with internal and external scientists to support projects, including multi-OMICS approaches.
  • Training & Support: Implementing and conducting workshops and training sessions for researchers and students in bioinformatics and statistics. Ensuring the delivery of mandatory courses. Developing and maintaining documentation and guidelines for bioinformatics and statistical methods. Support grant and publication writing.
  • Networking & Outreach: Building strong collaborative networks with other core facilities, external partners and other Helmholtz institutions in the field of data analysis. Presenting the core facility at conferences and workshops.
  • Technical & administrative responsibility: Managing computational resources, software infrastructure and high-performance computing clusters (HPC). Ensuring data protection, FAIR data principles and regulatory compliance. Efficient budget and resource management including regular billing of services.

Your profile

  • PhD degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Genomics or a related field (or Master's degree with 10 years of relevant work experience)
  • 5+ years of post-graduate experience in bioinformatics and 3 years of prior leadership experience (managing a team of highly skilled professionals (Master, PhD level))
  • Expert, up-to-date knowledge and hands-on experience in Genomics and Metagenomics data analysis
  • Hands-on experience with relevant bioinformatics tools and software (e.g. Scanpy, Bioconductor, Seurat, Proteome Discoverer)
  • Deep understanding of statistical and machine learning methods for biological data analysis and multi-omics integration
  • Strong programming skills (Python, R) and knowledge of workflow automation tools (Nextflow, Snakemake)
  • Experience with statistical modeling, Bayesian inference, and hypothesis testing
  • Extensive teaching experience: creating and delivering courses in biostatistics and bioinformatics
  • Expertise and hands-on working experience with working in HPC environments, cloud computing, Linux/Unix and database management
  • Dedication to excellent customer service and drive for continuous method development
  • Excellent communication skills and fluent in both written and spoken German and English

Desirable qualifications

  • Experience in an academic/clinical or industry-based multi-user core facility strongly preferred
  • Leadership skills with a focus on team culture and employee development
  • Knowledge of additional programming languages

If you fulfill all the requirements, you may be eligible for a salary grade of up to E 15. Social benefits are based on the Collective Wage Agreement for Public-Sector Employees (TVöD). The position has an (initial) fixed term of 2 years, with the possibility of moving to a permanent contract.
