The Institute of Computational Biology is a dynamic, young and innovative institute that is engaged in the development of artificial intelligence methods for biomedical applications. In this highly explosive and relevant field of research we are one of the largest and most recognized institutes in Germany. On a national and international level we are active and recognized in numerous initiatives and networks. We develop cutting edge Machine Learning toolkits for emerging biomedical data types. We are putting together an agile group of students interested in working as student research assistants (HiWi). This cohort will address challenges across multiple Python-based open source machine learning toolboxes for single-cell data analysis. You will be responsible for defining project milestones and implementing solutions as an independent team.

Your mission

  • Data pipelines for Deep Learning models in Torch and TensorFlow on distributed single-cell data.
  • Analysis and modelling with large distributed collections of single cell data.
  • Distributed processing and computations on image data with dask and zarr.
  • Infrastructure for interpretable modelling and causal Machine Learning.
  • Identify emerging technologies relevant for your application areas and facilitate technology transfer into biomedical research.
  • Contribute to an agile and supportive team of students, and improve your team-work, leadership, and project management skills.

Your qualifications

  • enrolled at a university or university of applied sciences
  • Exposure to software development, applied maths or single-cell data analysis
  • Experience in programming with Python
  • very good verbal and written fluency in English
  • Motivation to work independently in a team of other students
  • well-organized with flexibility to work on various upcoming tasks

Desirable qualifications

Remuneration and social benefits are based on the collective wage agreement for public-sector employees at federal level (EG 13 50% TV EntgO Bund). In addition, there is also the possibility of granting an allowance amounting to 15% if the necessary conditions are fulfilled. The position is (initially) limited to three years, but under certain circumstances an extension can be arranged.
