The German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) develops medical solutions for the precise prevention and treatment of diabetes. The DZD is one of the six German Centers for Health Research (DZG) and is funded by the government.

As national diabetes research center with 10 locations across Germany, DZD's mission is to uncover novel methods for diabetes prevention and treatment by closely integrating basic, clinical, and applied research. The strategic use and interconnection of all research data is pivotal in this endeavor.

Your responsibilities

  • Overseeing IT-driven data and knowledge management within the DZD
  • Leading a team of five staff members
  • Evolving and executing the DZD's data management strategy: Designing and establishing an IT infrastructure to manage and integrate clinical trials, biobanks, epidemiological data, and foundational research datasets (including servers, databases, software, and interfaces)
  • Crafting and implementing Open Science initiatives: Providing the needed infrastructure, utilizing open-source software, and promoting the FAIRification processes
  • Enhancing a knowledge graph using Neo4J technology
  • Designing and deploying tailored software solutions, such as dashboards
  • Creating overarching data management frameworks in collaboration with the German Centers for Health Research (DZG)
  • Training up-and-coming researchers in data management
  • Mentoring students on bachelor's and master's theses

Your qualifications

  • Academic degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Life Sciences, or a similar field, with a preference for candidates holding a Ph.D.
  • Extensive professional experience in data handling, ideally within a medical context
  • Professional background in designing and implementing IT infrastructure in academic research institutions, with an appreciation for open science practices
  • Basic knowledge in database management and structures
  • Leadership experience, particularly focused on staff development and empowerment
  • Exceptional team collaboration and communication skills
  • A strategic mindset with the ability to develop and execute both long-term visions and short-term goals
  • Proficient in German and English, both written and spoken, with negotiation skills

Provided that the prerequisites are fulfilled, a salary level up to E 14 is possible. Social benefits are based on the collective agreement for the federal public service (TVöD). The position is (initially) limited to 3 years, under certain circumstances an extension can be arranged.
