At Helmholtz Munich, we develop groundbreaking solutions for a healthier society in a rapidly changing world. We believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation. Through strong partnerships, we accelerate the transfer of new ideas from the lab to real-life applications, improving lives.

The Institute of Functional Epigenetics (IFE) focuses on understanding the epigenetic mechanisms whereby cells and organisms integrate metabolic signals, establish cellular memory, and regulate plasticity. We use cutting-edge methods (multi-omics, single cell, live cell imaging, modelling, chromatin biochemistry as well as various developmental, stem cell and cell biology systems) to predict, observe, and manipulate epigenetic processes.

The Schneider group is looking for a PhD candidate (f/m/x) to work on the interphase between epigenetics and cellular metabolism. The applicant should have experience in the fields of epigenetics and/or cellular metabolism and be motivated to develop and drive the project. The successful candidate will address central questions in epigenetics: what are the mechanisms how cellular metabolism impacts on epigenetic processes? How is chromatin controlled through cellular metabolism?

Your tasks

The successful candidate will implement a combination of in vitro and in vivo approaches, including different “omics” techniques, cellular editing and metabolic challenges. He/she will benefit from a vibrant scientific environment as well as the strong epigenetics, chromatin and metabolic health community at epigenetics@Helmholtz and in the Munich area.

Our Offer:

  • Scientifically stimulating environment with excellent facilities and vibrant chromatin community
  • To work in an interdisciplinary team of motivated people from around the world
  • Extensive professional development opportunities and career-building programs

Your profile

Candidates for this position should have:

  • Masters' degree in biology or a related field
  • Experience in at least one of the following is essential:
    • Chromatin biochemistry
    • ChIP-seq and RNA-seq techniques (including data analysis)
    • Cellular metabolism
    • Mammalian tissue culture and cell manipulation
  • Fluency in English (knowledge of German is not required)

This position provides the opportunity for you to build specialist knowledge whilst developing key professional experience, both of which will help you to make strides in your scientific career.

Remuneration and social security benefits are based on the German Collective Wage Agreement for Public-Sector Employees at Federal Level (EG 13 50% TV EntgO Bund). In addition, there is also the possibility of receiving an allowance if the applicable conditions are met. The position has an (initial) fixed term of three years but may be extended under certain circumstances.
