The Helmholtz Center Munich's Genomics Core Facility is looking for a staff scientist with strong expertise and interest in advanced Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies to support novel method development and R&D projects for internal and external customers. The ideal candidate has an appropriate university degree and extensive prior experience in molecular biology and next generation sequencing applications, supported by a publication record.

Our new colleague will enjoy working in a service team environment interacting with international customers from a diverse scientific background. Strong organizational, trouble-shooting, social and communication skills are highly important. The post holder will be able to interact with colleagues and customers in German and English and provide technical support in a friendly manner. Prior work experience in a genomic service setting as well as supervisory and teaching experience are a plus.

Your responsibilities

  • Develop, optimize, direct and execute novel and existing services to expand our core portfolio
  • Establish cutting edge technologies such as single-cell, ATAC- and ChIP-seq, long-read sequencing and spatial applications
  • Oversee routine NGS lab workflows including sample QC, library prep, and sequencing
  • Apply effective project management skills to achieve on-time completion
  • Participate in training of staff and customers
  • Work together with the bioinformatics team to develop complete work packages including data analysis
  • Contribute to the smooth running of the Genomics core facility (e.g. ordering, interaction with service engineers)

Your qualifications

  • Master/ PhD or equivalent in biology or a related field
  • Fluency in English and German (verbal and written)
  • Relevant publication record
  • Strong background and hands-on expertise of NGS technologies and applications including sample preparation, library preparation, sequencing, data QC and interpretation
  • Experience in creating and optimizing a variety of NGS sample preparation workflows

Essential skills

  • Extensive and broad hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques.
  • NGS library preparation (mRNA, total RNA, WGS).
  • Library preparation for Single-cell applications (e.g 10X Genomics)
  • Hands-on experience with the Illumina sequencing platform.
  • Precise documentation skills and experience in writing SOPs (Standard Operating procedures)

Desirable skills

  • Library preparation for Long-Read sequencing applications
  • Experience in operating liquid handling robots or other lab automation for high-throughput assays
  • Basic skills in related bioinformatics analysis and/or programming (‘R’) are highly desirable
