Our mission as research center: Discover personalized medical solutions for environmentally triggered diseases to promote a healthier society in a rapidly changing world.
The research group “human endogenous retroviruses” investigates the influence of HERV sequences on neural and brain development. HERVs are remnants of ancient germ line infections that have been genetically fixed and vertically transmitted since millions of years. Activation of HERV sequences can contribute to diseases by expression of pathogenic viral proteins or influencing the expression of cellular genes. Several recent studies, including our own, indicate that the tight regulation of HERVs is essential for a healthy brain and that dysregulation may be associated with neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, we want to understand the functional role and regulation of HERV sequences during brain development.
