Germany’s largest research organization, the Helmholtz Association, launched Helmholtz AI: This dedicated, interdisciplinary platform develops and promotes applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods for the Association’s main research fields (Health, Energy, Earth and Environment, Information, Space, Matter) in collaboration with its external and university partners. Its central unit operates at the Helmholtz Munich. Our mission is to enable research scientists to leverage AI methods optimally.


The Munich AI consultant team is focussing on Health and collaborates with researchers from the whole Helmholtz Association on projects on cancer and infection research, molecular medicine, as well as neurodegenerative and environmental diseases. We offer you the unique opportunity to use your expertise in AI to answer questions of great societal importance in a vibrant international environment.

To join our growing team, we are inviting applications for

AI Consultant in Health Research - Postdoc (f/m/x)

You will develop AI-based analytics for the unique data sets generated by renowned researchers, with a focus on health applications. You will also play a crucial role in achieving our long-term goal of facilitating open access to AI expertise through interdisciplinary collaborations and dissemination.

Your tasks

  • apply and disseminate emerging AI methods to solve concrete research questions
  • develop and maintain open-source AI scientific software
  • continuously learn about state-of-the-art AI methods and their applications
  • be a point of contact for questions related to AI and provide critical assessments
  • be a fundamental part of one of the largest scientific AI initiatives in Europe

Your profile

  • PhD degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, bioinformatics or another field related to data science
  • track record in applying state-of-the-art Deep Learning architectures (e.g. transformers) to biomedical tasks, ideally in medical imaging, drug discovery or multi-omics data
  • proficiency implementing state-of-the-art vision-language models or generative models
  • experience with multimodal representation learning and model alignment
  • systematic way of working, and the ability to communicate clearly with different stakeholders
  • open and curious mindset with a strong team spirit

If you fulfil all the requirements, you may be eligible for a salary grade of up to E 13. Social benefits are based on the Collective Wage Agreement for Public-Sector Employees (TVöD). The position has an (initial) fixed term of 2 years but may be extended under certain circumstances. The position offers home office options of up to 3 days per week, therefore it cannot be offered as a fully remote position.
