The Institute of Epidemiology mission is to understand the protective and harmful effects of genes, the environment and lifestyle on human health and disease using population-based epidemiology approaches.

We focuse on the assessment of environmental (e.g. ambient air pollution, meteorological parameters, noise) and lifestyle risk factors which jointly affect major chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and mental health. We research the health impacts of ambient air pollution and promote public awareness for mitigating environmental exposures and improving health.

In the framework of the research project "The Berlin-Brandenburg Air Study – a natural experiment investigating health effects from changes in airport-related exposures (BEAR Follow-up Study)" project we plan to investigate the associations between aircraft related air pollutants and adverse human health effects. For this purpose measurement campaigns with stationary and mobile devices will be performed. In the next step the data will be used for the exposure assessment of the study population.

Your responsibilities

  • Planning, conduction and quality control of air quality measurements, acquisition of exposure data from other measurement stations in Berlin
  • Preparation of exposure data for epidemiological analyses
  • Development of new approaches of exposure assessment for epidemiological research (source apportionment)
  • Statistical analyses including final writing of the reports, publication of the results in peer-reviewed journals, active participation in national and international conferences
  • Scientific supervision of the KORA aerosol measurement station in Augsburg

Your qualifications

  • Excellent and recently completed PhD or equivalent level of professional qualification in chemistry (with the focus on analytical chemistry), physics, aerosol sciences or related subject
  • Experience in receptor modelling techniques (PMF, CMB), Lenschow approach or other methods for source apportionment of atmospheric aerosol as well as knowledge of dispersion modeling of fine particles and gaseous air pollutants
  • Basic statistical background for the data processing and analysis as well as motivation to learn or improve programming skills in R, SAS or similar statistical software

Desirable qualifications

  • Practical experience in handling continuous (e.g. SMPS, DMPS, CPC, TEOM) and manual (impactor technique, passive sampler, personal sampling) air pollution measurement techniques
  • Knowledge in the field of aerosol sciences
  • Advanced communications skills in spoken and written English and scientific writing, German is of advantage
