Your mission

  • The lung epithelium is the first line of defense for airborne environmental challenges such as noxious chemicals, particles and infectious viruses such as SARS-CoV2. Lung epithelial cells respond to cellular stress or respiratory infections by secreting interferons that initiate innate and adaptive immune responses. Release of type I interferons by the lung epithelium rapidly recruits and activates monocytes/macrophages as well as natural killer cells which subsequently activate T cell to clear virus infected cells.
  • In this PhD project, we will systematically dissect the interferon-induced immune response of lung bronchial and alveolar epithelial cells as induced by virus infections, LPS and cellular stress using in vitro human co-culture systems with immune cells as well as in vivo animal models and advanced in intravital microscopy of the lung.
  • We will further analyze regulation of interferon-mediated innate and adaptive immune responses by applying KO mouse models as well as pharmacological inhibitors.

Your qualifications

  • Candidates should have a solid background in molecular biology and immunology as well as experience in cell biology, microscopy and preferentially mouse work
  • Applicants should have demonstrated outstanding performance through their undergraduate studies
  • Besides creativity, a strong ability for problem solving through analytical thinking combined with an enthusiasm for scientific research is highly desirable
  • Additionally, we expect good communication skills, fluent English and the ability for teamwork
  • the successful applicant will join an enthusiastic and collaborative group where a multidisciplinary approach is pursued
