Our mission as research center: Discover personalized medical solutions for environmentally triggered diseases to promote a healthier society in a rapidly changing world.

At Helmholtz Munich you will find a scientifically stimulating international environment. Together with renowned scientists and supported by an excellent infrastructure you will have the opportunity to make an important contribution for a healthier society.

The Stiel Lab (Cell Engineering Research Group) is part of the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging at Helmholtz Munich, which is linked to the Chair of Biological and Medical Imaging at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). The focus of our work is on the development of genetically encodable molecular markers and sensors for innovative imaging techniques, mainly fluorescence and optoacoustic imaging. Such markers and sensors are a crucial factor for imaging techniques in the life science field but also in preclinical research, e.g. for the investigation of the immune system or developmental processes.

The markers and sensors we develop are based on specifically modified proteins. Towards this end we use strategies of protein engineering, directed evolution and high-throughput screening. However, we are also interested in reprogramming whole cells. The molecular tools developed are used both at the level of single mammalian cells and at the level of whole organisms.

We are now seeking a highly qualified and motivated
