The Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (iTERM) develops and implements tools to analyze biological samples' 3D structure and molecular identity. At iTERM, we bring together cutting-edge science from biology, chemistry, engineering, and computer applications. Our aim is to obtain a holistic view of biological systems in health and disease. We develop clearing technologies for cellular-level imaging and deep learning algorithms (AI) to analyze large imaging and molecular data in an unbiased way. Worldwide media, including New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Süddeutsche Zeitung, have highlighted our research. You can find out more about us at

iTERM is growing rapidly, and to further strengthen the setup of our institute, we are looking for highly motivated and talented students with biochemistry knowledge. Throughout your thesis, you will build solid skills in cell-targeting LNP development and the identification of targeting LNPs at the tissue and cell level.

The duration of the thesis depends on the study regulations.

Your tasks

  • Development of DNA barcoded lipid nanoparticle (LNP) libraries.
  • Establishing a correlation between the LNP barcodes and targeted cells.
  • LNP preparation.
  • Tissue isolation.
  • Reading out the barcodes using PCR.

Your profile

  • Bachelor/Master's student in Bioengineering/Biochemistry/Biomedical science or a similar field.
  • Basic knowledge and experience with laboratory work are required.
  • Knowledge of mRNA therapeutics and (lipid) nanoparticles is a plus.
  • A structured and independent working style and the ability to work in a team are required.
