Helmholtz Zentrum München is a research center with the mission to discover personalized medical solutions for the prevention and therapy of environmentally triggered diseases and promote a healthier society in a rapidly changing world.

The Helmholtz Zentrum München in Munich, Germany, is a member of one of the leading research associations in Europe - the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. The aim of our research is to proactively detect health risks involving humans and the environment, decoding the mechanisms of pathogenesis and developing concepts for prevention and therapy.

Research within the Institute of Stem Cells and Epigenetics aims at determining how stem cells originate in vivo and at establishing epigenetic principles behind changes in cellular plasticity and genome reprogramming. We study how the transitions in cell potency and cell fate are regulated by chromatin-mediated processes using a variety of approaches including quantitative imaging, modeling, functional genomics and cell biology. Understanding the molecular mechanisms behind the maintenance and manipulation of cellular plasticity will have strong implications in regenerative medicine and disease, and will help understanding human reproduction and infertility.
