We are Helmholtz Munich. In a rapidly changing world, we discover breakthrough solutions for better health.

Our research is focused within the areas of metabolic health/diabetes, environmental health, molecular targets and therapies, cell programming and repair, bioengineering, and computational health. We particularly excel in the fields of basic research, bioengineering, artificial intelligence, and technological development.

Through this research, we build the foundations for medical innovation. Together with our partners, we seek to accelerate the transfer of our research, so that laboratory ideas can reach society and improve people’s quality of life at the fastest rate possible.

This is what drives us. Why not join us and make a difference?

The Computational Health Center (CHC) is globally recognized for innovations in data analysis and modeling of biological systems and diseases, anchored at Helmholtz Munich and the Technical University Munich.

The Research Team Computational Neurobiology is participating in several NIH-funded initiatives, including the Accelerating Medicines Partnership for Alzheimer's Disease, and is pioneering integrative metabolomics and multi-omics research in neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. The position is part of NIH’s Translational Bioinformatics for Drug Repositioning and Combination Therapy program and funded through a collaborative project with Jan Krumsiek's lab (Weill Cornell Medicine, NYC, USA).

Prof. Matthias Tschöp (Dr. Med., Dr. hc.), CEO of Helmholtz Munich:

"We believe that excellent research requires a range of different perspectives. Diverse teams reach better solutions and are more innovative in their research topics.

Establishing our Diversity Management Strategy demonstrates our commitment to ensuring an appreciative company culture based on mutual respect. We are also implementing diversity-sensitive processes throughout our whole organization."

Your tasks

  • Collecting, processing, and harmonizing large-scale omics-based (association) data and integration into the AD Atlas Neo4j database.
  • Further development and extension of the online user interface at www.adatlas.org, including tools for computational drug repositioning and suitable visualization of results thereof.
  • Identification of disease-relevant genes using graph-, machine/deep learning-, and integrative omics-based approaches to be utilized as seeds for network-based in silico drug repositioning.
  • Conducting multi-omics analyses of drug signatures: transcriptome, proteome and particularly metabolome.
  • Applying advanced AI-based methods for network transformation to enable simultaneous prioritization of candidate drugs across omics.
  • Conceptualizing and implementing unified scoring schemas for weighting edges (intra-/inter-omic and trait associations) integrated from heterogeneous sources.

Access to several international research consortia consisting of a team of experts across disciplines will provide you with many opportunities to expand your network, learn from colleagues, and disseminate your own research at international conferences. Our team in Munich is passionate, dynamic, international and very supportive. We look forward to getting to know you!

Your profile

We are looking for a postdoctoral scholar (f/m/x) motivated to enable the whole research community to leverage multi-omics data through rigorous data curation, integration, and provision at the intersection of neuroscience and data science/machine learning. Ideal candidates will have:

  • A PhD in computational biology, biostatistics, computer science, neuroscience, or a related field.
  • Strong programming and data visualization skills (R and Python).
  • Experience in working with large-scale omics data (preprocessing, QC, annotation).
  • Knowledge of statistics in the context of biomedical research (especially association analyses with molecular data/biomarkers).
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including experience in communicating across discipline boundaries.
  • Enthusiasm and a high level of motivation for scientific work and reproducible research.

Desirable qualifications

  • Experience in using the Neo4j graph database management system and in developing R Shiny apps is an advantage.
  • Background and strong interest in neuropsychiatric/neurodegenerative diseases (particularly Alzheimer's).
