Janna Nawroth's primary research interest is to understand the mechanobiology of the airway epithelium. The lab studies how normal and abnormal mechanical forces shape epithelial differentiation and remodeling on genetic and functional levels, and how the resulting properties of extracellular matrix, tissue architecture, and mucus affect mucociliary clearance, the primary mechanical defense of the airways.

Your responsibilities

  • Development of physics-based computational model describing mucus transport in ciilated airway epithelia in health and disease (e.g. COPD)
  • Aquisition and analysis of microscopy data in cilated airway epithelia and other biological samples to extract multiscale mechanical parameters (structure, material properties, kinematics, dynamics).
  • Image data integration and analysis using machine learning, AI, or similar.
  • Independent development of research questions, experimental designs and data analysis strategies.
  • Mentoring & training of undergraduate and graduate students and collaboration with other team members and labs
  • Planning and preparation of manuscript outlines and conference presentations.

Your qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Math or similar
  • Strong publication record in physics-based mathematical modeling of biomechanics and biofluids
  • Strong coding experience in Matlab or similar
  • Experience or strong interest in experimental work, especially microscopy
  • Background in modeling of motile cilia at different spatial scales (elastic filaments, rotors, envelope etc.
  • Background in complex fluids and viscoelasticity
