The Comprehensive Pneumology Center (CPC) at Helmholtz Munich is a  translational research center dedicated to respiratory medicine, which is also a partner site of the German Center for Lung Research (DZL), an association of the leading university and non-university institutions dedicated to lung research in Germany.

The Fernandez lab at the Institute of Lung Health and Immunity is conducting clinical-translational research focusing on immune regulation of lung fibrosis. A particular interest of the lab is the innate immune system and the interaction, migration, peripheral and local contribution to disease.
In this setting, the successful candidate will be able to follow own research avenues in an interesting and rapidly developing field, interacting with clinical partners (KUM), as well as basic research settings (Helmholtz Munich). You will be part of a growing, interdisciplinary team of scientists and students and collaborate in a wide scientific network of lung scientists, immunologists and clinicians to advance our understanding of the human immune system and its regulation in the lung.

We are looking for a highly motivated, independent and creative individual with a background in biology or medicine. Prior immunology experience, is an advantage.

Your responsibilities

  • Taking the lead in experimental processing, statistical analysis, interpretation and development of the project
  • Assisting in a collaborative clinical – basic research environment, human sample procurement, organization
  • Creative use of immunology-based in vitro and in vivo human organotypic systems
  • Assisting in the training and supervision of students and scientific writing (manuscripts, co-develop applications for fellowships and grants)
  • Developing your own ideas and projects to apply for independent research funding is highly encouraged

Your qualifications

  • PhD degree in biology or related area
  • Enthusiasm for human immunology
  • Experience in processing and analyzing human material, especially culture of human cell lines
  • Passion for science, innovation and creative and independent work
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to work with colleagues from different disciplines
  • Proficient English language skills (both written and spoken)
