We are Helmholtz Munich. In a rapidly changing world, we discover breakthrough solutions for better health.

Our research is focused within the areas of metabolic health/diabetes, environmental health, molecular targets and therapies, cell programming and repair, bioengineering, and computational health. We particularly excel in the fields of basic research, bioengineering, artificial intelligence, and technological development.

Through this research, we build the foundations for medical innovation. Together with our partners, we seek to accelerate the transfer of our research, so that laboratory ideas can reach society and improve people’s quality of life at the fastest rate possible.

This is what drives us. Why not join us and make a difference?

We are seeking a postdoc (f/m/x) to our newly established sister lab at the institute AI for Health (AIH) at Helmholtz Munich.

The candidate will lead the activities in applied machine learning. The project aims to develop novel methods to uncover the cellular transitions and complexity of tumors at a single cell level (see Hirling et al. 2023 Nature Methods; Toth et al. 2022 Cell Reports; Mund et al. 2022 Nature Biotechnology; Szkalisity et al. 2021 Nature Communications).

Prof. Matthias Tschöp (Dr. Med., Dr. hc.), CEO of Helmholtz Munich:

"We believe that excellent research requires a range of different perspectives. Diverse teams reach better solutions and are more innovative in their research topics.

Establishing our Diversity Management Strategy demonstrates our commitment to ensuring an appreciative company culture based on mutual respect. We are also implementing diversity-sensitive processes throughout our whole organization."

Your tasks

  • Modeling Cellular State Transitions: The focus is on modeling how cells undergo state transitions
  • Comparison of Cell Visualization: The study involves comparing the visual appearance of single cells along tissue slides
  • Use of Generative Models and ViTs: Generative models and Vision Transformers (ViTs) are employed in a supervised, self-supervised, or weakly supervised context
  • Access to Pathology Slides: The lab has access to hundreds of thousands of pathology slides from various tumors
  • Goal of an Intelligent System: The aim is to build a large-scale intelligent system to uncover how cells undergo significant state changes, such as the development of cancer

Your profile

  • PhD in computer science, math, physics, or related fields, focusing on image analysis or machine learning
  • Collaborative team member with strong initiative and project management skills, especially in early-stage lab settings
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
  • Proficient in Python and ML frameworks (PyTorch or TensorFlow), with experience in self-supervised learning
  • Strong publication record in biological image analysis and machine learning, with a focus on integrating different data modalities

Desirable qualifications:

  • Experience in mentoring students is a plus
  • A strong background in mathematics and statistics is a plus
  • Interest in biological applications, and familiarity with other data modalities (transcriptomics, proteomics) is an advantage

Benefits

  • Career Development: Postdoc program, scientific training & career center with tailored offers
  • Scientific Resources: State-of-the-art infrastruture and Core Facilities
  • Recreation: 30 days annual leave, flexi days, plus public holidays
