Our mission as research center: Discover personalized medical solutions for environmentally triggered diseases to promote a healthier society in a rapidly changing world.
The research unit environmental simulation (EUS) focuses on the impact of environmental factors on the biosphere-atmosphere exchange through the simulation of diverse climatic conditions.
In the frame of the DFG-funded project "The role of petrichor - the scent of rain - in desert ecosystems and consequences under global warming" in cooperation with the Universities of Cologne, Germany and Ben-Gurion Israel, the joint project will study the 'smell of rain' or petrichor in desert soils, its functions in arid soil ecosystems and its potential implications under climate change.
The focus of the PhD position is to study the chemical composition of odours (volatile organic compounds, VOCs) released by dry soils following rain events and to identify the producers and responders of odours within the microbial community of the biocrust and topsoil. This will involve trace gas analysis using mass spectrometry and stable isotope techniques, experiments in climate chambers and visits to collaborating laboratories.
