We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join our international research team at the Institute for Diabetes and Obesity (IDO) of the newly established Helmholtz Diabetes Center (HDC) in Munich. The Helmholtz Center Munich is a member of one of the leading research associations in Europe – the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers.

Our laboratory (Research Unit in Functional Genomics of Mitochondria, headed by Dr. Fabiana Perocchi) is interested in characterizing mitochondrial signal transduction cascades that occur in response to physiological and pathophysiological stimuli (e.g. exercise and diet). We develop experimental and computational strategies to predict, test, and reverse the effects of genetic and chemical perturbations on mitochondrial metabolism.
To this goal, we combine genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics approaches with traditional genetic, biochemical, and physiological techniques applied to mouse models, human cell lines and patient samples. The aim of the postdoc research project is to characterize fiber muscle type-specific mitochondrial signatures in various conditions of health (e.g. normal diet and exercise) and disease (e.g. diet-induced obesity, neuromuscular diseases such as ALS), using integrative 'omics.

Your responsibilities

  • Establish the mitochondrial signature of distinct muscle fiber types from mouse models
  • Characterize mitochondrial fingerprint from exercised (healthy) and diseased muscle fibers from mouse models
  • Develop experimental strategies for rescuing disease phenotypes directly in primary skeletal muscle cells (from mouse models and human patients) by targeting of mitochondrial proteins
  • Train PhD students in muscle physiology and single muscle fiber isolation
  • Writing of manuscripts
  • Presentation of scientific work at national and international conferences

Your qualifications

  • Strong experimental skills in skeletal muscle tissue culture
  • Strong experimental skills in single muscle fiber isolation and genetic manipulation
  • Strong experimental skills in muscle satellite stem cell isolation and proliferation
  • Strong experimental skills in the development and phenotyping of in vivo hypertrophy mouse models
  • Desired qualifications
  • Experience in biochemical analysis of protein expression, localization and interaction
  • Experience in molecular biology
