The Helmholtz Institute for Metabolic, Obesity and Vascular Research (Helmholtz-Institut für Metabolismus-, Adipositas- und Gefäßforschung, HI-MAG) at the University of Leipzig is part of the Helmholtz Zentrum München and aims to uncover the molecular underpinnings of metabolic, obesity and vascular disorders to enable precision therapies. The "Vascular Epigenetics" group, headed by Dr. Bilal Sheikh, elucidates the molecular mechanisms that underpin the complex interplay between metabolic, lifestyle and epigenetic factors. The group focuses on these themes in the context of metabolic disease. In close partnership with the University Hospital in Leipzig (Universitätsklinikum Leipzig), we aim to translate our discoveries into effective therapies against vascular dysfunction in a variety of pathologies.

PhD Student in Bioinformatic Modelling of Metabolic Diseases (f/m/x) 100523

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to learn and apply bioinformatic analyses (in R) to analyse high-throughput data generated from metabolomics, proteomics (mass spectrometry), transcriptomics (RNA-seq, single cell RNA-seq) and chromatin profiling (ChIP-seq, scATAC-seq). The applicant will work closely with our strong team of wet-lab scientists and the bioinformatics core at the institute.

    Your tasks

    • Learning and utilising existing bioinformatics pipelines (in R) for the analysis of sequencing and mass spectrometry data
      • Integrating data from multiple analysis platforms (proteomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics) to model changes in pre-clinical models and in patients samples
      • Working in close collaboration with wet-lab scientists and bioinformaticians to help design experiments to test novel hypotheses generated from data analysis
      • There will be an opportunity for the applicant to also so wet lab work if they so desire

    Your qualification

    The ideal applicant should be highly motivated, have good communication skills and be a quick learner. You will be expected to work in a team together with highly-motivated young scientists.

    The applicant requires:

    • Exceptional grades in Master’s and Bachelor’s programs.
    • Fluent written and spoken English is mandatory
    • Background in bioinformatics analysis (R, Galaxy)
    • Good communication skills

    This position also provides the opportunity for you to build specialist knowledge and collect significant professional experience, both of which will help advance your scientific career.

    Remuneration and social benefits are based on the collective wage agreement for public-sector employees at federal level (EG 13 50% TV EntgO Bund). In addition, there is also the possibility of granting an allowance amounting to 15% if the necessary conditions are fulfilled. The position is (initially) limited to three years, but under certain circumstances, an extension can be arranged.
